Eight bold Hypar Umbrellas transformed this narrow courtyard into a vibrant, functional space—perfect for outdoor learning and play, year-round.
Ramlegh Park Primary School required a smart shade solution to provide all-weather protection in a narrow 1,000m² courtyard. Due to space constraints and the presence of underground services, traditional shade structures were not viable. Shade ‘n’ Sails proposed and installed 8 Hypar Umbrellas, delivering generous coverage while maintaining an open, functional space for students.
Initial considerations included attaching sails to existing structures or installing multiple shade sail posts. However, structural limitations and limited space ruled out both options. Hypar Umbrellas were selected for their single-post design, offering substantial shade coverage—448m² in total—while reducing ground disturbance.
The umbrellas were constructed using Commercial 95 fabric in Driftwood and Navy Blue, known for its high UV protection and long-lasting durability. The steelwork was powder coated in B25 Aqua Gloss, offering a vibrant, modern finish that complements the school’s environment.
The project presented several site-specific challenges, including extensive underground services and restricted access due to nearby construction works and narrow building spacing.
Installation was scheduled entirely over the Christmas school break, requiring precise timing to allow for concrete curing and structure assembly. The team took extra precautions to protect the artificial turf, placing boards under equipment to avoid damage. Crane access was limited, but with careful planning and collaboration, the umbrellas were installed successfully and safely.
Each umbrella featured high-performance Commercial 95 shade mesh and galvanised steel frames powder coated in B25 Aqua Gloss, ensuring both durability and visual appeal.
The project was completed in January 2025, meeting all deadlines and design objectives, and delivering a seamless integration into the courtyard space.
Ramlegh Park Primary School was thrilled with the result. The umbrellas have completely transformed the area, making it suitable for outdoor learning, lunch breaks, and recreational use year-round.
The added shade has increased student use of the area and contributed to a more comfortable and functional outdoor environment.
This project is a testament to Shade ‘n’ Sails’ expertise in designing creative solutions for complex educational spaces. The Hypar Umbrellas provided the ideal balance of function, minimal disruption, and bold design. With careful planning and high-quality materials, the previously underutilised space is now a shaded hub of activity that supports student wellbeing and engagement.
