In a bid to offer students a versatile and weather-protected outdoor space, Corpus Christi Primary School partnered with ADMA Group to construct a Barrel Vault tension membrane structure over their basketball court. This project not only provided functional benefits but also added a modern architectural element to the school grounds.

Design and Specifications

The Barrel Vault structure measures approximately 35 metres in length and 23 metres in width, ensuring ample coverage for the basketball court area. The chosen fabric, Flexlight Perform 912 S2, is renowned for its durability and excellent performance under varying weather conditions. This high-quality membrane provides protection from rain and harmful UV rays while allowing natural light to filter through, creating a bright and inviting space beneath.

The steelwork supporting the membrane was hot dip galvanised and powder coated, enhancing both durability and aesthetic appeal. The galvanisation process ensures the steel is resistant to corrosion, while the powder coating adds an extra layer of protection and a polished finish.

Engineering Challenges and Solutions

Key to the design was an effective water drainage system. Guttering was installed along both long sides of the structure to channel rainwater efficiently away from the playing surface. This prevents water accumulation, ensuring the court remains dry and safe for use throughout the year.

The installation phase was carefully planned to minimise disruption to the school’s daily activities and to protect the surrounding landscape. The project team’s expertise ensured the structure was erected with precision and care, meeting all safety and quality standards.

Execution and Completion

Completed in January 2021, the Barrel Vault structure at Corpus Christi Primary School was a triumph of engineering and design. The project team’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence ensured a smooth installation process and a final product that met all client specifications.

Client Satisfaction and Impact

The addition of the Barrel Vault structure has significantly enhanced the facilities at Corpus Christi Primary School. Students now have access to an all-weather sports area, promoting physical activity and outdoor play regardless of the weather. This dedicated space is also utilised for various school events, providing a sheltered area for assemblies, performances, and other activities.

The client, ADMA Group, expressed their satisfaction with the project, praising the structure’s quality and functionality. The successful completion of this project has reinforced the school’s commitment to providing high-quality facilities that support student engagement and well-being.

Conclusion

The Barrel Vault structure at Corpus Christi Primary School is a prime example of how innovative design and engineering can transform educational spaces. By addressing both functional and aesthetic needs, the project has created a lasting and valuable asset for the school community. This structure not only provides essential weather protection but also enhances the overall learning environment, setting a standard for future educational infrastructure projects.
