Learn how a 30m x 18m Barrel Vault structure offers all-weather protection for Belgrave Heights Christian College’s basketball court.
Belgrave Heights Christian College aimed to provide their students with an all-weather outdoor sports facility, focusing on the basketball court. The solution came in the form of a custom-designed Barrel Vault membrane structure, a combination of practical engineering and innovative design.
The Barrel Vault structure spans an area of approximately 30 metres by 18 metres, offering substantial coverage for the basketball court. The design features Flexlight Perform 912 S2 fabric, chosen for its durability and superior performance in various weather conditions. The fabric ensures the area beneath is protected from rain and harsh sunlight, creating a versatile space for sports and other activities throughout the year.
The steelwork, essential for the structural integrity of the Barrel Vault, was hot dip galvanised. This process ensures that the steel is highly resistant to corrosion, significantly extending the lifespan of the structure and reducing maintenance requirements.
One of the significant challenges faced during the project was the limited access to the site for large vehicles, such as cranes. The restricted space required innovative approaches to transport and position the steelwork without disrupting the surrounding landscape. The project team employed additional machinery and carefully planned logistics to manoeuvre the steel into place, ensuring minimal impact on the school grounds.
To address water drainage, guttering was installed along both long sides of the structure. This design feature efficiently channels rainwater away from the playing surface, preventing water accumulation and ensuring the court remains dry and safe for use in all weather conditions.
Despite the challenges posed by limited site access and the need to protect the surrounding landscape, the project was completed successfully in January 2022. The meticulous planning and execution by the project team ensured that the structure was installed to the highest standards, meeting all the client’s requirements and expectations.
The Barrel Vault structure has significantly enhanced the outdoor facilities at Belgrave Heights Christian College. Students now benefit from an all-weather sports area that is both functional and visually appealing. The structure provides a dedicated space for physical education classes, sports training, and recreational activities, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among students.
Belgrave Heights Christian College expressed their satisfaction with the project, highlighting the structure’s ability to withstand various weather conditions while providing a safe and sheltered environment for students. The successful completion of this project has reinforced the college’s commitment to offering high-quality facilities that support student development and well-being.
The Barrel Vault structure at Belgrave Heights Christian College is a testament to the effective integration of engineering prowess and thoughtful design. By overcoming site-specific challenges and prioritising functionality, the project has delivered a lasting and valuable addition to the college’s infrastructure. This project exemplifies how well-executed structural solutions can transform educational environments, providing students with enhanced opportunities for physical activity and outdoor learning.
