St. Bede’s College in Mentone sought to create a striking yet functional outdoor space that could provide students with protection from the elements while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of their campus. The result was the bespoke ‘Birdwing’ shade structure, a testament to innovative design and practical engineering.

Design and Specifications

Spanning an impressive 37 metres in length and 14.6 metres in width, the ‘Birdwing’ structure was meticulously designed to offer optimal weather protection and a unique architectural statement. The shape of the structure resembles a bird’s wing, an elegant and dynamic form that complements the college’s environment.

The fabric chosen for this project was Hiraoka Sundream in Cool, a highly translucent PVDF material. This fabric not only provides excellent rain and UV protection but also allows a significant amount of natural light to filter through, creating a bright and welcoming space underneath. The translucency of the PVDF fabric ensures that the area remains well-lit throughout the day while shielding students from harsh weather conditions.

Engineering Challenges and Solutions

One of the key engineering challenges of this project was designing an effective drainage system. To address this, the water drainage was ingeniously integrated into the centre columns, with the water being plumbed underground. This not only maintained the aesthetic integrity of the structure but also ensured efficient water management, preventing any potential water accumulation issues.

The steelwork for the ‘Birdwing’ structure was hot dip galvanised, ensuring durability and longevity. This galvanisation process protects the steel from corrosion, making it suitable for long-term outdoor use and reducing maintenance requirements.

Execution and Completion

Completed in March 2018, the ‘Birdwing’ structure at St. Bede’s College stands as a proud example of combining functionality with design excellence. The project was executed with precision, adhering to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Client Satisfaction and Impact

The completion of the ‘Birdwing’ structure has significantly enhanced the outdoor facilities at St. Bede’s College. The structure not only serves as a practical solution for weather protection but also adds a visually striking element to the campus, creating an inviting space for students to gather, learn, and socialise.

St. Bede’s College expressed immense satisfaction with the project, noting the structure’s ability to meet their needs for both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The ‘Birdwing’ shade structure has become a notable feature of the Mentone campus, symbolising the college’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities for their students.

Conclusion

The custom ‘Birdwing’ structure at St. Bede’s College exemplifies how thoughtful design and engineering can transform a space. By prioritising both utility and visual impact, the project has created a lasting legacy that benefits the entire school community.
