In an effort to enhance spectator comfort and aesthetic appeal at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo, the City of Greater Bendigo Council commissioned the construction of two innovative curved cantilever structures. These structures serve as a testament to how thoughtful design can seamlessly integrate functionality and visual appeal in public spaces.

Design and Specifications

The cantilever structures were designed to align with the existing landscape, following the fence line of the oval with elegant curves. This architectural decision not only ensured a harmonious blend with the surroundings but also provided practical benefits by maximising the protection offered to spectators.

The primary aim of the project was to offer an aesthetically pleasing solution to shield spectators from the elements, particularly during the football season. The powder-coated steelwork, chosen for its durability and superior finish, was contrasted with the fabric to create a visually striking yet cohesive design.

Project Phases and Challenges

The project unfolded in two phases. The initial phase involved designing and installing the first structure at the southern end of the oval. This structure set a benchmark for quality and effectiveness, leading to the approval of a second identical structure at the northern end.

One of the key challenges was to ensure that the structures not only provided adequate protection from the weather but also enhanced the overall visual appeal of the oval. The design team successfully addressed this by selecting materials and finishes that complemented the existing environment while delivering robust performance.

Materials and Construction

The fabric used in the structures was selected for its durability and ability to withstand various weather conditions, ensuring long-lasting protection for spectators. The steelwork was powder-coated in a contrasting colour to the fabric, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and providing a superior finish that is both durable and visually appealing.

The curved cantilever design required precise engineering to ensure stability and safety. The construction team executed the project with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the structures were installed to the highest standards.

Execution and Completion

Completed in June 2018, the cantilever structures at Queen Elizabeth Oval have become a notable feature of the venue. The successful completion of both phases of the project was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the design and construction teams, as well as the vision of the City of Greater Bendigo Council.

Client Satisfaction and Impact

The City of Greater Bendigo Council expressed great satisfaction with the project, noting the enhanced spectator experience and the visual improvement to the oval. The structures have provided much-needed protection from the elements, allowing spectators to enjoy events in greater comfort.

The positive feedback from the initial structure led to the swift approval and completion of the second structure, highlighting the client’s confidence in the project team’s ability to deliver high-quality results.

Conclusion

The cantilever structures at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo exemplify how practical needs and aesthetic considerations can be effectively balanced in public infrastructure projects. By providing essential weather protection and enhancing the visual appeal of the venue, these structures have added significant value to the oval. This project underscores the importance of innovative design and meticulous execution in creating public spaces that are both functional and visually engaging.
